The world’s biggest and most prestigious badminton tournament arrives on the Gold Coast this Sunday.

This is the first time the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has selected an Australian destination to host the event since its initiation in 1989.

With 1500 of the world’s best players gathering on May 21 for the week-long competition, the Sudirman Cup will reach a global television audience of more than 400 million.

The tournament will be the first major sporting event staged at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With the Games less than a year away, this will provide significant exposure and the opportunity to test the facility and the city’s preparedness for a major sporting event.

Defending champions China who have won 10 from the past 14 championships, will be returning the $53,000 22-carat gold plated cup up for grabs.
