DELHI 2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES


3-14 October 2010

In 2010, the Games return to Asia for the second time (the first time being Kuala Lumpur in 1998) to the most populous Commonwealth country, India. This is the first time India has hosted the Games. In October 2008 they hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games for the first time in the city of Pune. The city of Delhi is being redeveloped to welcome the Commonwealth.

The weather in Delhi at Games time is likely to be hot with a range of 17°C to 37°C degrees, and a humidity factor of anywhere between 31-78%.

Athletics (Existing Stadium)

  • At existing stadium with major renovations and up-graduations – completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 58,000.
  • PUR synthetic surface for competition track of 10 lanes.
  • Separate warm-up arena of 150m x 150m for Throwing events with floodlights.
  • Tunnel to be extended up to covered hold-up area.
  • Stadium galleries to be brought closer to the competition synthetic Athletics track.
  • Extensive up-graduation at the West Block of the stadium for providing accommodation and other technical rooms as per norms of IAAF, CGF and National Federations.

Lawn Bowls (New Outdoor Venue)

  • At a new outdoor venue within the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex, on the west side of the existing stadium. Capacity of 2,111. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Four competition synthetic greens.

Weightlifting (New Indoor Venue)

  • At a new air-conditioned indoor auditorium to be built within the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 2,500.
  • 1 competition platform; 12 warm-up platforms.


MAJOR DHYAN CHAND NATIONAL STADIUM

Hockey: Men and Women (Existing Stadium)

  • At the existing venue with major up-graduations and renovations. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 19,118 (Pitch 1); 2,500 (Pitch 2).
  • 2 competition pitches; 1 warm-up pitch.
  • Creation of third pitch, outside the stadium, in the existing grass Hockey field.
  • Floodlighting will be provided for Hockey pitches 1 and 2.
  • Electronic and video-matrix scoreboards will be provided for pitches 1and 2.
  • Hockey pitch in the stadium to be brought closer to the gallery on the west side, while other galleries to be brought closer to the pitch.


INDIRA GANDHI STADIUM SPORTS COMPLEX

Cycling (New Velodrome)

  • At the new arena at the site of the existing velodrome – a 250m covered timber track in air conditioned arena. Completion target: March 2010.
  • Capacity of 4,000.
  • Installation of electronic vide-matrix scoreboard with replay facility.
  • Rooms for International/National Federations, CGF, Technical Rooms, etc.

Gymnastics (Existing Venue)

  • At the existing air-conditioned indoor stadium with renovations and up-graduations. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 14,348.
  • Replacement of existing floor.
  • Construction of warm-up hall adjacent to the existing I.G. Stadium, the competition venue.
  • Office and other accommodation as per CGF, International/National Federations norms.

Wrestling (New Indoor Stadium)

  • At the new multi-purpose air-conditioned indoor stadium. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 6,932.
  • New indoor stadium to be built of 50m x 36m x 12m with lighting facilities and acoustics treatment.
  • Warm-up hall to accommodate four wrestling mat areas adjacent to competition venue to be built.
  • 3 competition mats; 4 warm-up mats.
  • Electronic scoreboards with replay facility.


DR. KARNI SINGH SHOOTING RANGE

Shooting (Existing Venue)

  • At the existing stadium with major renovations and up-graduations.
  • New range in the same complex will be built for 300m which can also be used for 50m.
  • 10m indoor air-conditioned range and separate 25m range to be built at the same location as per the design given by NRAI.
  • Renovation of the existing ranges of 10m, 25m, 50m, Trap and Skeet.
  • More accommodation for technical officials, media, change rooms for Shooters and rest rooms for Teams, medical, Anti-Doping volunteers etc to be built.
  • Electronic target system at all ranges.
  • 1,000 yards range for Big Bore shooting and other supporting facilities to be built at MANESAR (Police Department, Haryana Government).


TYAGARAJ SPORTS COMPLEX

Netball (New Indoor Stadium)

  • A new multi-purpose air-conditioned indoor stadium will be built.
  • Stadium of 60m x 45m x 12m with lighting facility and acoustics treatment. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 5,000.
  • Accommodation required for various offices, change rooms for players, technical officials, media, medical and Anti-Doping, Games management office, etc.
  • 1 match court & 2 warm courts. Warm-up hall of 45m x 40m x 12m to accommodate two Netball courts adjacent to competition venue to be built along with change room.
  • Administrative block for the Organising Committee of 2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi and IOA.
  • Electronic scoreboards with replay facility.


TALKATORA INDOOR STADIUM

Boxing (Existing Venue)

  • At the existing venue with up-graduations earmarked and renovations. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 3,035.
  • Renovation of the existing indoor stadium as per the International Boxing Federation’s norms.
  • 1 competition ring; 4 warm-up areas.
  • Separate warm-up area to be provided.
  • Underground parking facility to be created.
  • More accommodation for technical officials.


SIRI FORT SPORTS COMPLEX

Badminton (New Indoor Stadium)

  • New indoor air-conditioned stadium. Completion target: December 2009.
  • 5 match courts; 3 warm-up courts.
  • Capacity of 4,748.

Squash (New Indoor Stadium)

  • A new air-conditioned stadium. Completion target: December 2009.
  • 11 singles courts, convertible into 5 double courts.
  • Capacity of 1,500 for the preliminary round matches.
  • Centre court to have a capacity of 3,128 with retractable seating.

Table Tennis (New Indoor Stadium)

  • New indoor air-conditioned stadium to be constructed. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 4,297.

  • Swimming pool, Diving pool and Warm-up pool. Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 5,178.
  • New outdoor Aquatics complex to be constructed with the features following.
  • Filtration plant and heating system for all four pools.
  • Diving tower to be equipped with lift.
  • Accommodation for officials, Teams, change rooms etc to be as per norms of the CGF and International/National sports bodies.


R.K. KHANNA TENNIS COMPLEX

Tennis

  • 1 centre court, 9 match courts, 4 warm-up courts.
  • Completion target: December 2009.
  • Capacity of 4,494.

GAMES VILLAGE

Location: 63.5 hectares (ha) land adjacent to Akshardham Temple at Noida Mor to the North of NH24.

  • About 17 hectares will be used for the Residential Zone.
  • Balance will be used for International Zone and training areas.
  • The Residential Zone will be developed partly through ‘Public Private Participation’.
  • Plots to be auctioned for Hotels/Serviced Apartments.
  • Rest of the Residential Zone to be built as Residential Apartments by DDA.
  • The Games Village will be medium-rise apartments. The 1,168 centrally air-condition units will accommodate athletes and officials from all 71 CGA nations. Being built as 34 towers, they are further clubbed into 14 blocks. Each of the towers when fully built will be surrounded by landscaped greenery and rolling greens.
  • Some components of the Village like the Dining area, parts of the International Zone etc to be developed though temporary overlay.
  • Training areas to comprise of swimming pool, athletics track, fitness centre, training grounds etc.
  • Residential Zone of the Village planned in the part of the site where ambient sound levels are the least.
  • DDA engaged the National Physical Laboratory of India (NPLI), a premier research institute, to suggest remedial measures to bring down sound levels within acceptable limits. NPLI has opined that it is possible to bring down the noise levels to such limits by a package of noise control measures.
  • Estimated cost of development of Games Village is US$214 million.

    175 hectare land adjacent to the Games Village site

    The Executive Board of 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has decided to have the Main Press Centre (MPC) and International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) on 175 ha land adjacent to the main Games Village site.
    This land will also house training areas for outdoor sports, Swimming and Hockey and one or two multi-purpose indoor stadia for indoor sports.

Logo

The logo for the XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 is inspired by the Chakra, the national symbol of freedom, of unity and power. Spiralling upwards, it depicts the growth of India into a proud vibrant nation.

Mascot

The most visible face of the Commonwealth Games that is emblematic of all the values of the country is the mascot called Shera. Majestic, powerful and graceful Shera carries within an implicit message…. One that brings into sharp focus the fragility of the environment in which he lives. Shera is the face of the Commonwealth Games and will encourage all citizens of India to “Come out and Play”, to come out and participate and make the Games a success.
