Mariafe Artacho del Solar

Mariafe Artacho del Solar (beach volleyball) and Taliqua Clancy put in a massive effort at their second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham but were overcome in the final by the defending champions from Canada and had to settle for silver. It was an identical result to their Games debut on the Gold Coast four years earlier. Mariafe moved from Peru with her mother when she was 11, settling in Sydney. She accepted an AIS scholarship for beach volleyball when she was 19 and made her Olympic debut for Australia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – pairing with Nicole Laird – but they lost all three pool matches and did not progress. Artacho del Solar and new partner Clancy didn’t lose a set until the semi-final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, eventually taking a 2-1 victory over Vanuatu, before losing the gold-medal match to Canada 2-0. However, the Australian pair got their revenge at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, beating the no.1 ranked Canadians in the quarters, before eventually losing the gold-medal match to the US to again take the silver.
