Mark Knowles

Mark Knowles OAM (hockey) carried the Australian flag at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Knowles played in four Commonwealth Games, capturing gold medals as a member of the Kookaburras at each of the Melbourne 2006, Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 campaigns. As a 20-year-old, Knowles was the youngest member of the gold medal winning team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and on the bronze medal winning Olympic squads in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and Rio 2016, where he was captain of the team. Leading the Kookaburras from 2014 to 2018, Knowles was on the teams which won the 2014 World Cup and the 2005 and 2012 Champions Trophy tournaments. Named FIH Player of the Year in 2014, he was also awarded Best Young Player in 2007, Knowles played 324 times for Australia. Calling time on his illustrious career following the Gold Coast Games, Knowles will be remembered in Commonwealth Games folklore for his actions during the opening ceremony, parting from tradition to carry the flag at the back of the team as Australia marched.
