An integral and often vital component of transitioning from studying to the workforce, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) is now accepting applications for the Commonwealth Games Federations (CGF) eqUIP Program Internship.

The program, which has been providing opportunities for tertiary students since 2014, helps them to make positive contributions to their communities through sport while focusing on applying theoretical knowledge gained through education to real-world situations.

The internship is one that is designed to challenge and grow interns across numerous areas of the workforce, while exposing them to the sport industry at any stage of a Games cycle.

Tyler Parker, a recent sport management graduate of Deakin University and who has himself completed the eqUIP Program, is now employed as a Program Administrator at CGA and acknowledged the exposure that his placement provided.

“The eqUIP Internship was a valuable experience in developing my understanding of the sporting landscape, and helped to enhance key skills that will further my career readiness,” Parker said.

The program, which includes the chance to attend a workshop with interns from other Commonwealth Games Associations, also fosters the cultural growth and development of its participants, bringing together all to empower them as emerging leaders.

“The eqUIP Workshop allowed us to come together, engage, and share insights from our cultures with one another and how they can be applied to each of our organisations, whilst simultaneously providing a global networking opportunity.”

Parker, who also had the unique experience of travelling with the Australian Team to the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, noted how the internship fostered his growth through a range of experiences.

“The opportunities to travel overseas, work hands on with the team, and engage with various stakeholders has fast tracked my career out of university.”

“I’m very grateful to have had strong mentors who have supported and nurtured my time at CGA through the eqUIP Internship.”

The eqUIP Internship Program allows students to develop industry knowledge, experience the sport industry firsthand and enhance the expertise gained during their studies.

This internship position, available for up to eight months and commencing in February 2024, is for current tertiary students undertaking degrees in sport management, business, communications, marketing degrees or similar.

Students who participate in this program will be encouraged to apply the theory they have learnt at university to real life examples, gain industry insights, and develop both personal and professional skills.

Applications close at 5pm, Friday 1 December.
