Alexandra ‘Alex’ Hulley (athletics) won the silver medal in the women’s hammer throw at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games where she had a massive group of family and friends watching on to support her. The Sydneysider lined up for her second Games four years later in Birmingham but couldn’t replicate the result.
Alex grew up playing representative netball and didn’t focus solely on athletics until the age of 15 when she qualified for the World Youth Championships in 2013 in Ukraine. Claiming silver at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, she quickly rose through the Australian ranks, breaking the under 16, under 18 and under 20 national records.
At her Commonwealth Games debut on the Gold Coast, the then 20-year-old won silver for her 68.20m throw, the longest ever distance recorded by an Australian at the Games. Gold at the Apia 2019 Pacific Games was followed by a 70.55m personal best at the Sydney Track Classic in February 2020, becoming just the third Australian – and the first in 14 years – to throw over 70m.
Hulley, who was coached by Bre Clement and Karyne Di Marco, announced her retirement in March 2025. She works as an Occupational Therapist and Disability Support Worker.
