Kurt Fearnley AO PLY stands as one of Australia’s most decorated and inspirational athletes, whose remarkable career in wheelchair racing has left an indelible mark on the sporting world. Born with sacral agenesis, a congenital condition affecting the development of his lower spine, Fearnley defied early medical expectations to become a global champion and a powerful advocate for disability rights.

Over a distinguished 25-year career, Fearnley represented Australia at three Commonwealth Games, including the Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. He secured gold in the 1500m T54 at Delhi 2010 and added a marathon gold and 1500m silver at the Gold Coast 2018 Games, where he was honoured as the Australian flag bearer for the closing ceremony. Across the five Paralympic Games he attended, he amassed 13 medals – three gold, seven silver, and three bronze. His Paralympic triumphs include gold medals in the marathon and 5000m T54 events at the Athens 2004 Games, and a marathon gold at Beijing 2008.

Beyond the track, Fearnley’s achievements are equally inspiring. In 2009, he crawled the Kokoda Track to raise awareness for men’s health, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and commitment to social causes . His advocacy extends to numerous roles, including Chair of the National Disability Insurance Agency Board, Commissioner of the Australian Sports Commission, and Board Director of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee.

In recognition of his service to sport and the community, Fearnley was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2018 . He was also named the 2019 New South Wales Australian of the Year and became the first athlete with a disability to receive the prestigious ‘The Don’ Award from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2018.

In May 2025, Fearnley was inducted as the 34th Life Member of Commonwealth Games Australia, a testament to his extraordinary contributions both on and off the field . His legacy continues to inspire athletes and advocates across the nation.
