Alessia McCaig
Alessia McCaig (cycling) was the youngest member of the cycling team at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games where the Bendigo teenager competed in the sprint events at the Lee Valley VeloPark, producing a best result of 4th in the team sprint with Kristina Clonan and Breanna Hargrave.
Alessia took up cycling when she was nine and joined the Bendigo and District Cycling Club on a hand-me-down bike from her older brother. McCaig cites the Junior Nationals Track Championships in 2017 as a major inspiration after she finished fourth in several events.
In 2021, she was awarded a scholarship by the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame where she was mentored by Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning diver Matthew Mitcham.
The Adelaide-based rider won the keirin and 500m time trial at the 2023 track nationals before adding the sprint crown while retaining the keirin and time trial in 2024.
The McCaig name is synonymous with cycling in Bendigo: her grandfather, Alan, was instrumental in establishing the Bendigo International Madison in 1970 and was inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall of Fame for his contribution to the sport. Her great uncle Frank was an accomplished rider and administrator, her father Cameron is on the board of Cycling Victoria, while her brother Connor won the Austral Wheel Race and is a state selector.
