Alex Wilson

Alex ‘Ally’ Wilson (3×3 basketball) became the first Indigenous player to represent Australia in basketball at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, coming home with a bronze medal after a hard-fought win against New Zealand. Introduced to basketball through her father who played professionally, the proud Ngarrindjeri woman from Murray Bridge in South Australia was quick to rise up the domestic and international ranks. At the age of 16, she signed with the Adelaide Lightning as a development player in 2010 before earning the 2014 WNBL Rookie of the Year award in her debut year at the Townsville Fire. Becoming a two-time WNBL champion with the Sydney Uni Flames, in 2015 and 2017, she returned home to the Lightning in 2020. She now plays for the Bendigo Spirit and NBL1 Central club Norwood Flames. A pivotal member of Australia’s bronze-winning 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championships team, Wilson capped off the year being named the MVP of the Australian Under-20 Championships. Selected into the Opals training squad in 2019, before ultimately being overlooked for the final Asia Cup squad, Wilson returned to the green and gold in the lead-up to 3×3 basketball’s debut at Tokyo 2020 although Australia failed to qualify.
