Alex Winwood
Alex Winwood (boxing) suffered a controversial knockout defeat to Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba at his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham, despite quickly getting back to his feet to resume the fight. It was the same boxer who defeated him on his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where had an unlucky split-decision loss in the round of 32. A proud Noongar man – his grandfather is celebrated indigenous artist Primus Ugle – Alex grew up in Perth as one of eight children. He took up boxing at the age of 15, after encouragement from his high school teacher. Winwood turned pro in late 2021 and moved to the Gold Coast, linking up with Dragon Fire Boxing’s renowned manager Tony Tolj, where he trains with Commonwealth Games alumni twins Andrew Moloney and Jason Moloney. Alex is an ambassador for the Australian Institute of Sport’s (AIS) ‘Share a Yarn program’ – which give Australian athletes meaningful opportunities to connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
