Alyssa Polites (cycling) was limited due to the pandemic with international opportunities but the teen born in Bundoora shot to attention last year when she won the junior time trial and road race at the national championships. She stepped up to win the under-23 road race crown in 2022, while still 18, and within weeks was also the national Madison champion riding with Maeve Plouffe. Polites hails from the Caulfield Carnegie Club in south-east Melbourne and last year commenced a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport (Science) and a Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University. She says sibling rivalry was the inspiration for taking up the sport when she aged 12, jealous that her older brother had been gifted a new race bike by her parents. She showed an interest in joining her brother and father in the saddle to get a new bike herself. Birmingham will be her first Commonwealth Games.
