Andrew Charter
Andrew Charter (hockey) was Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper at his third Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, conceding just four goals in two matches on the way to the Kookaburras’ seventh consecutive gold medal.
Australia’s most capped goalkeeper with over 200 games for the Kookaburras, Charter played basketball, soccer and baseball in his hometown of Wagga Wagga when he was young but found himself playing hockey after older sister Deanne – who was coaching an under-13 boys team at the time – asked him to make up the numbers.
After making his international debut in 2011 at the Azlan Shah tournament, Charter helped the Kookaburras to win back-to-back Champion Trophies in 2011 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2014. He made his Olympic debut in Rio in 2016 and five years later was part of the team that claimed silver in Tokyo.
In 2020, Charter was named as an ambassador for the ‘Blue Tree Project’ to help end the stigma of mental health. A qualified engineer, Charter has also set up a recruitment company The Bench which helps athletes with employment opportunities.
