Angie Ballard (athletics) joined swimmer Blake Cochrane as the first Australian Para-athletes to compete at four Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. Despite having to step up to her less-preferred distance of 1500m, she was equal to the challenge and won her third consecutive medal in the event, placing second to teammate Madison de Rozario in the women’s T54 class.
The Canberra-born and based athlete was severely injured in a car accident in 1989 aged seven. Five years later she began wheelchair racing after her parents convinced both Angie and her brother – who has spina bifida – to get involved in Para-sport. Her Paralympic debut came at Sydney 2000 and her first medal came four years later in Athens, where she finished with bronze in the 100m T53 as reigning world champion. Ballard competed at her seventh Paralympics in Paris in 2024, having amassed four silver and four bronze medals across 100m, 200m and 400m distances. She also has five gold medals from nine world championships.
Coached by Fred Periac, Ballard has been a long-time advocate for organisations with an interest in people with disabilities, sport, health and exercise.
