Billy Polkinghorn

Billy Polkinghorn (boxing) knocked out his opponent inside 30 seconds in his first 63.5kg (light-welterweight) bout at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham before being eliminated in the round of 16. The British-born boxer – who now lives in Perth – showed his potential by winning the Youth Golden Gloves 60kg title in 2014. He was named best men’s boxer at the Commonwealth Games selection trials in February. Polkinghorn and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Harry Garside have been long-time rivals. Garside beat him to claim the Elite Australian title in 2018 – and was too good again in 2019 – before going on to claim bronze at Tokyo 2020, Australia’s first Olympic medal in 33 years.
