Billy Polkinghorn
Billy Polkinghorn (boxing) was named best men’s boxer at the selection trials in February, securing his ticket to Birmingham with four wins in the 63.5kg (light-welterweight) division, one of the few weight divisions where Commonwealth Games gold has eluded Australia. The British-born boxer – who now lives in Perth – showed his potential by winning the Youth Golden Gloves 60kg title in 2014. Polkinghorn and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Harry Garside have been long-time rivals. Garside beat him to claim the Elite Australian title in 2018 – and was too good again in 2019 – before going on to claim bronze at Tokyo 2020, Australia’s first Olympic medal in 33 years.
