
Bob Lay
Robert ‘Bob’ Lay AM (athletics) was a sprinter who competed in the men’s 110-yards, 220-yards and 4×110-yard relay at the Perth 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Lay made the 110-yards quarter-final, 220-yard semi-final and ran on the 4×110-yards relay which placed fifth after dropping the baton. Two years following the Perth 1962 Games, Lay went on to represent Australia at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics. He competed with great success at the Tokyo Olympics, making the 100m semi-final clocking an outstanding time of 10.42 in the quarter-final. In the semi he ran a wind-assisted 10.35. Lay also made the 200m quarter-final and helped the relay to the semi-finals. Lay was a three-time national champion in the men’s 100m and 200m. Following his athletics career, Lay continued to forge a significant sports administration career in Victoria, being bestowed with an Order of Australia (AM) for his work. Sadly, Bob Lay passed away in August 2022, aged 78.
