Brandon Starc (athletics) competed in the men’s high jump at three Commonwealth Games, making his debut at Glasgow 2014 before going on to win gold at his home Games on the Gold Coast in 2018 and silver four years later in Birmingham. 2018 proved to be a stellar year: four months after his Gold Coast gold he equalled the Australian record with a PB of 2.36m in Germany, then went on to become just the fourth Australian to win a Diamond League Trophy in Brussels.
Brandon, the younger brother of Australian Test cricketer Mitchell Starc, began in Little Athletics in Parramatta with his siblings when he was 5 and began to focus on high jump in 2009 at Hills Sports High School. As a 16-year-old, he won silver in the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010 and reached the final at the world junior championships in Barcelona two years later.
At his Olympic debut in Rio in 2016, Starc jumped 2.29m in the qualifying round, later claiming 15th in the final. He headed to his second Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 where he placed 5th (2.35m) but did not advance past the qualifying round at his third Games in Paris. He also had two top eight finishes at world championships in 2015 and 2019.
He and wife Laura welcomed a baby son Oliver in November 2021.
