Bree Masters

PRINT PAGE

Bree Masters (athletics) made her Commonwealth Games debut at Birmingham 2022 where she ran the second leg of the women’s 4x100m relay which placed a close fourth but was elevated to bronze a year later after Nigeria was stripped of the gold medal for a doping violation. She also reached semi-finals of 100m. That performance came off the back of the Eugene world championships just a fortnight earlier where she set an 11.29 PB, the fastest time by an Australian woman at a global championship in 15 years.

A precocious youth athlete, Masters grew up a dancer and competing in surf lifesaving and athletics. When clashing schedules forced the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts student to choose between her secondary sports, Masters dropped athletics due to the strong pull of her surf friendships. Opting to pursue dance full-time after graduation, within three months Bree knew she had chosen the wrong option so in 2013, she moved to the Gold Coast to join Kurrawa Surf Lifesaving Club.

After multiple Australian Open medals as well as the World Open Beach Sprint in 2017, Bree achieved everything she wanted in surf lifesaving by the age of 23, so she returned to athletics at the end of 2019 after a decade away from the sport. Within two years, Masters was in the mix for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, running 11.47 in the semi-final of the 2021 Australian Championships and placing second in the final.

Following her 2022 campaign – which also included silver medals at both the Australian (11.33) and Oceania (11.34) Championships – another excellent year followed in 2023, including silver in the 100m at the national titles and a PB of 11.23 in Auckland. In March 2024, she was part of the quartet that broke the 25-year-old Australian record in the 4x100m (42.94), then lowered it again to 42.83 at the World Relays, securing a place at the Olympics. In Paris, Bree reached the semi-finals of the 100m with a near PB of 11.26 in the heat and was part of the 4x100m relay that was ranked 15th.

Bree married long-time boyfriend and 2017 Stawell Gift champion Matthew Rizzo in November 2024 and when she matched her husband’s feat in April 2025, she became just the second woman to win off scratch after Melissa Breen in 2012.

Outside of sport, Masters completed a Bachelor of Communication (Business) at Bond University in 2022.
