Callum Peters

Callum Peters (boxing) announced himself as a boxer to be reckoned with at his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham, despite being narrowly beaten for middleweight (75kg) gold by tough Scotsman Sam Hickey in the fight of the tournament. Neither of the Australian TV commentators could pick a winner at the end of the bout, which was ultimately scored 29-28 by the judges. One of 10 indigenous athletes on the 429-strong Australian team 19-year-old Callum was the youngest member of the boxing team and the youngest boxer in the 17-man middleweight field. One of nine children, Callum took up boxing to improve his fitness and is coached by his father, Bradley, at North Central Boxing Club at Kapunda near the Barossa Valley. Callum, who has had more than 50 amateur fights, was Australian Youth Champion in 2019 and was named best fighter of the tournament.
