Chris Flavel

Chris Flavel (lawn bowls) made his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham where he won silver with Damien Delgado in the B6-B8 men’s pairs. Flavel took up lawn bowls when he was 10, following his grandparents, father Robert and mother Claire into the sport in Port Pirie. After booking in for what he thought would be a routine physio session in 2007, Chris was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder leading to progressive degeneration of the face, shoulder blades and upper arm muscles which has no cure. After his diagnosis, he continued to enjoy success against able-bodied players in the South Australian Premier League, with his consistency leading to his recall to the Australian para bowls squad in 2019 after narrowly missing selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Flavel has claimed multiple titles over the years, including the men’s singles at the 2015 Australian Multi-Disability Championships. He notched up his 50th international appearance for Australia during the 2022 UK tour.
