Deborah Acason (Lovely) (weightlifting) has represented Australia at five Commonwealth Games and two Olympic Games. A talented sportswoman, Acason has represented Australia in discus, hammer throw and shot put as a junior in 1999, won Queensland state titles as a cyclist in 2005, and was selected in the Australian women’s rugby training squad in 2006. But it is in weightlifting where Acason excelled. Starting the sport at the age of 12, lifting heavy logs to build tree houses with some of the neighbourhood boys, Acason won silver medals in the women’s 75kg clean and jerk, snatch and combined events at Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games. In Melbourne in 2006, Acason went one better claiming the gold medal in the women’s 75kg, a self-described career highlight. Acason returned at Delhi in 2010 to win bronze, before finishing fourth at Glasgow in 2014, and fourth in front of friends and family on the Gold Coast in 2018. Competing at the Athens 2004 Olympics, Acason finished 13th, before improving to finish 6th in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics.
