Demi Hayes

Demi Hayes (rugby 7s) co-captained Australia to victory alongside Charlotte Caslick in women’s rugby sevens’ second Commonwealth Games appearance in Birmingham in 2022. Four years earlier, she was part of the team that claimed silver on the Gold Coast where they were beaten by arch rivals New Zealand.

Born in the Queensland mining town of Mount Isa, Hayes grew up on the Darling Downs; firstly, at the family property near Glenmorgan, then Warwick and Toowoomba where she went to boarding school. Demi began playing rugby aged 16 after a local coach saw her athleticism with the ball and invited her to a rugby trial.

After finishing school, she moved to Narrabeen on Sydney’s northern beaches in 2015 to join the Australian Youth Sevens squad and was part of the team that won gold at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa when she was in year 12.

She made her senior-level debut for Australia at the 2016 Canada Women’s Sevens against Brazil and although the then 17-year-old missed selection for the Rio Olympic team, she trained and played with the Australian squad leading up to those Games. Hayes made her Olympic debut in Tokyo.
