Dietrich Roache

Dietrich Roache (rugby 7s) was the youngest member of the men’s squad at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where the fleet-footed 21-year-old winger was the team’s leading points-scorer with one try and seven conversions from six games.

Born and bred in Sydney’s west, Roache initially wanted to follow in the footsteps of his Samoan father Kruger who played for Canberra Raiders. Dietrich went to school at famed rugby league nursery Fairfield Patrician Brothers and was halfback in the team that claimed the NRL Schoolboys’ competition in 2018.

However, after being given a free ticket to the Sydney Sevens tournament, Roache saw the game and was hooked. He progressed through the junior ranks as a member of the Sydney under 18s, NSW under 18s and the NSW Rugby Gen Blue program, then was selected for the World Schools 7s tournament in New Zealand in 2019. The following year saw the speedster’s elevation to the senior squad and in 2021 he made his Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Roache was also the leading points-scorer (343) in the 2021-22 World Rugby Sevens Series which Australia won for the first time.
