Dudley Gallagher
Dudley Gallagher (boxing) won the silver medal in the middleweight (75kg) division at the Hamilton 1930 Empire Games. Gallagher was dubbed “Knockout Gallagher” by Canadian newspapers for his efforts in the early competition bouts, but lost out in the final bout to reigning Olympic champion Ted Mallin. Conditions were tough for boxers in the lead-up to the Games, unseasonably warm conditions saw temperatures reach over 37 degrees celsius meaning Gallagher would lose multiple pounds after every training session. The weightloss prompted Gallagher to attempt to compete in both the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions but rules prevented one man from competing in two divisions. Following the Games, Gallagher asked team manager H. R. Weir if he could remain in North America to tour the United States and Europe.
