Edgar Gray
Edgar ‘Dunc’ Gray (cycling) carried the Australian flag at the opening ceremony of the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney. Hailing from Goulburn, Gray won Olympic bronze in 1928 in Amsterdam, becoming Australia’s first cycling medallist at the Olympics, before becoming the first gold medallist in 1932 in Los Angeles when he won the 1000m time trial. At the 1934 Empire Games in London, Gray won Australia’s first cycling gold at the Games, taking out the 1000m time trial. Dunc returned four years later in Sydney where he won the 1000m sprint gold. Australian team flag bearer at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Gray was a strong supporter of the Olympics and Commonwealth Games movement, he was honoured with the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney, the venue for the track cycling events at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. An inaugural inductee in the Cycling Australia Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, Dunc Gray is one of Australia’s greatest cyclists.
