Edward ‘Ed’ Trippas (athletics) made his Commonwealth Games debut at Birmingham 2022 where he placed seventh in the men’s 3000m steeplechase which was contested as a straight final.
Trippas joined Little Athletics aged eight and started running steeplechase aged 15. In 2016, the year 12 Shore school student was runner up in the under-20 3000m steeplechase at the Australian Championships and went to the ISF World Schools Cross Country Championship in Budapest. He then went to the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championship in Kampala, Uganda before heading to the US to commence an economics degree at Princeton University.
After an injury and COVID-affected 2019 and 2020, Trippas left it till the 11th hour to qualify for his first Olympics. With just two and a half hours until the close of the qualifying window, he crossed the 3000m steeplechase finish line in Castellón in 8:19.60, which was a PB, the third-fastest time ever by an Australian and 2.4 seconds under the Tokyo cut. At the delayed Tokyo Games, he finished 11th in his heat (31st overall).
His 2022 campaign saw his world championships debut in Eugene where he finished 20th in 8:23.83, the second-fastest time by an Australian at the world championships. Returning to the USA after Birmingham and transferring to the University of Washington, Trippas took down one of the oldest records in Huskies’ track and field history which had stood for 36 years. He returned to Melbourne in October 2023 to train with the On Athletics Club under Craig Mottram.
