Eric Bigby

Eric Bigby (athletics) was a two-time Australian 100m sprint champion, claiming the coveted title in 1970 and 1971. Entering the Edinburgh 1970 Commonwealth Games as Australia’s best chance of a medal in the 100m against Jamaican star Don Quarrie, Bigby didn’t get a chance to compete in the final after suffering the effects of a recurring thigh injury in the heats. The injury forced Bigby to pull out from the competition and withdraw from Australia’s 4x100m relay team. The Queenslander had previously competed in the 1964 Olympic Games as a member of the 4×100 relay team. After his athletics career, Bigby had a long career in Government administration and became Clerk of the Executive Council in the Queensland Government, before retiring in 1999.
