Gabor Arato

Gabor Arato (fencing) competed in sabre events at the 1966 Games in Kingston and again in 1970 in Edinburgh. After arriving in Australia after leaving his homeland of Hungary in 1957, Gabor quickly became one of Australia’s best fencers. Winning a bronze medal in the men’s sabre in Kingston, Gabor was also a member of the team which won silver in the sabre teams competition. Arato was the 1968 Australian national men’s sabre champion, a four-time South Australian champion, a four-time Western Australian champion. The champion fencer also served as Surgeon Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy.
