Genevieve Gregson

Genevieve Gregson (LaCaze) (athletics) is a middle distance runner who competed in the Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. In Glasgow and the Gold Coast she finished 5th in the 3000m steeplechase. After studying at and competing for the University of Florida in NCAA events, Gregson made her Olympic debut in London in 2012 and also competed in Rio in 2016 where she made the final of both the steeplechase and the 5000m. She was appointed the Australian athletics team co-captain at the 2019 World Championships. In 2018, she married fellow athlete and 2014 and 2018 Games team member Ryan Gregson. Genevieve set the national record for the 3000m steeplchase in 2016. At the closing ceremony of the 2014 Games in Glasgow, the runner joined jumped on stage during Kylie Minogue’s performance of ‘Locomotion’, which she said was to celebrate her 25th birthday.

Why did you begin your sport?

I am one of four kids, and my other siblings are three boys. I was destine to run.

Do you have any pre-competition routines or rituals?

Braiding my hair and wearing pearl earrings.

What is your most memorable sporting achievement?

Rio Olympics 2016 - making two Olympic finals in the 3km steeple and 5000m.

Who is your hero / idol, and why? Have you ever met them?

Eloise Wellings - she has helped me develop as an athlete but also as a person. She has guided me as a young female athlete into a "veteran" and I have watched and looked up to her for as long as I can remember. Eloise is truly inspiring to all female athletes.

Who has been the most influential person or people in your career and why?

My parents because they supported and guided all the decisions made to make sure I had every opportunity in the world to be an elite athlete. No matter what the commitment, they backed me 100%. My coach Nic Bideau - he has shown so much belief and confidence in me right from the start of my professional career. I have achieved more with my running then I could of ever imagined and I know there is so much more to come.

Traveling the world with Ryan Gregson.

What is your sporting ambition?

Win gold in front of my home town at the 2018 Commonwealth Games
