George Vasil

George Vasil (weightlifting) competed in the 1970 Edinburgh Games and 1974 Christchurch and the 1972 Munich Olympics for Australia. Winning gold medals at both Edinburgh and Christchurch, first in the flyweight division in 1970 and then in the featherweight class in 1974, Vasil set a new Games record in both events in winning gold. Born in Cyprus and migrated to Australia in 1961, one of his school teachers, Gary Knoke, was also a teammate at the 1970 Games. Knoke encouraged George to take up weightlifting. Vasil is a member of the Weightlifting Australia Hall of Fame.
