Helen Gray
Helen Gray (swimming) hailed from Townsville and swam for Australia at the 1970 Edinburgh and 1972 Munich Olympic Games. In Edinburg she won the silver medal in the 800m freestyle at just 13-years-old, becoming one of the youngest medallists in Australian and Commonwealth Games history. One of the first charges to be coached by legendary mentor Lawrie Lawrence, Gray is immortalised with a plaque on the Townsville ‘Walk of Fame’ which recognises Olympians born in the town.
