Jake Birtwhistle (triathlon) completed a full set of medals at his second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, adding a bronze in the mixed relay to his gold (mixed relay) and silver (individual) medals from the Gold Coast 2018 Games. Originally more comfortable in athletics, Birtwhistle won the World School Cross Country in Malta in 2012 after claiming 11 junior Australian titles on the track over 1500m and 3000m steeplechase between 2009 and 2012. He started to move to triathlon in 2013, but still claimed the coveted under-20 title at the Zatopek event, as well as being runner up in the under-20 road running championships two years later. Birtwistle claimed the 2014 junior duathlon world title and silver at the world junior triathlon event. He was part of Australian team that won 2017 mixed relay world title in Hamburg and outstanding results in 2019 – including wins in Leeds and Hamburg – saw him end the year ranked world no.6, earning an early nomination for an Olympic spot in Tokyo where he was the first Australian home in 16th.

Why did you begin your sport?
After spectating some triathlon events in Tasmania as a kid I was interested to give one a try myself.
Do you have any pre-competition routines or rituals?
not really, or nothing that I would say is overly interesting. My routine stays very similar for every race but I try to avoid any superstitious type of behaviour to keep clear of any extra issues that could come as a result of not being able to follow a strict routine.
What is your most memorable sporting achievement?
I find it tough to decide between winning the world U23 championships in 2015 and standing on my first World Triathlon Series podium in Hamburg in 2016.
Who is your hero / idol, and why? Have you ever met them?
An athlete that I have always looked up to would be Jan Frodeno. He was the Olympic champion during the time I first started to have a real interest in triathlon and has progressed into one of the best athletes in triathlon history. I have met him before and he is just as normal as the rest of us.
Who has been the most influential person or people in your career and why?
Craig Redman was one of the most influential people to my career, he planted the idea of being a world class triathlete long ago when I was a runner still and supported me greatly during my transition and early years as a pro triathlete. without him, I'm not sure I would be an athlete at all now.
Do you have any hobbies away from your sport?
I am interested in a range of things away from sport including photography, music and design.
What is your sporting ambition?
To be the best.
