James Bacueti
After unsuccessful trials in 2014 and 2018, James Bacueti (Gymnastics) qualified for his first Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where he won bronze in the Vault and narrowly missed another in the Team event. James grew up in Canberra and got into the sport pretty much as soon as he could walk, with his mum enrolling him because he was so energetic. Alongside him for much of his early career training at the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club was coach Zou Li Min who tragically died in 2015. The 2010 ACT Sports Star of the Year was later selected for the Australian Institute of Sport training at the National Centre of Excellence. At the 2012 Nationals, he came sixth or better in every event, tying for gold in the Vault, and defended that title in 2013 as well as coming second on the Floor. Bacueti was then selected for Australian Youth Olympic Festival in 2013 and his first senior competition was the 2015 World University Games. Bacueti competed at the 2019 World Championships, where he finished 11th in the Vault. He finished 1st in the Vault at the 2022 Australian Nationals and competed at all four World Cup events in 2022. In 2016, Bacueti gained his Advanced Coaching Accreditation and served as an assistant coach for the ACT men’s artistic team at the 2016 Nationals.
