John Devitt

John Devitt AM (swimming) enjoyed a tremendous Cardiff 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games winning three gold medals including the 110-yard freestyle, and as part of the 4×220-yard freestyle and 4×110-yard medley relay teams. Competing during a golden time in Australian swimming against swimmers like Jon Henricks, Murray Rose and John Konrads, Devitt claimed the 1958 and 1960 Australian 110-yard titles. A two-time Olympian, Devitt won gold in the 100m freestyle at the Rome 1960 Olympics, and gold as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team at the Melbourne 1956 Games. Devitt was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an “Honor Swimmer” in 1979 and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1986. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989, and received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.
