
John Dobbie AM
John Dobbie (lawn bowls) is part of a famous lawn bowls family. A member and captain of the fours team in 1970 in Edinburgh and as a member of the pairs in 1974 in Christchurch. Dobbie won two world titles in Sydney 1966 as a member of the Australian triples team where he was captain, along with a silver in the fours team. Serving in the Australian army (AIF) from 1941-1945 in the Artillery Survey Unit – 2nd Fourth Flash Spotting Unit, Dobbie was a talented sportsman, also representing Victoria in lacrosse. After his playing days, Dobbie had a long career in sports administration in lawn bowls, lacrosse and as a member of the State Sports Council in Victoria. His father, Frank, was a two time Australian champion in the 1920’s and 30’s. Dobbie is a life member of Bowls Australia and was the ‘face of bowls’ for many years on Channel Seven’s ‘World of Sport’, before being inducted in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1986.
