Josh Azzopardi (athletics) was the lead-off runner in the men’s 4x100m relay at his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham but unfortunately the team couldn’t get the baton to the finish. Since then, the Camden local has gone on to cement his status as one of Australia’s premier sprinters – making the semi-finals of the World University Games in 2023, taking home a bronze medal for his 10.27 sec 100m effort at the 2024 Oceania Championships in Mackay – and playing a pivotal role in the qualification of Australia’s 4x100m relay team for the Paris Olympics which went on to finish 6th, breaking the Australian record in their heat. He also received a last-minute call up for an individual spot in the 100m in Paris where he was 4th in his heat and did not progress.
Josh’s journey in athletics began at the Camden Little Athletics Centre in southwest Sydney aged 6. Despite early ambitions of playing rugby league – he won the under 18s grand final with the Camden Rams in 2018 and received a rugby sevens offer in 2019 – Josh shifted his focus to athletics aged 17.
Azzopardi trains under former 100m sprinter Rob Marks of the Project Elite Track Squad. Outside of athletics, Azzopardi studies a Diploma in Applied Fitness at the Australian College of Physical Education.
