Kiah Melverton
Gold Coast swimmer Kiah Melverton (swimming) claimed four medals at her second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham: Gold and world record as part of the 4x200m freestyle, silver in both the 800m free (as part of an Aussie trifecta) and 400m individual medley and bronze in the 400m freestyle. It followed her bronze in the 800m freestyle at her first Games in her hometown four years earlier.
Kiah grew up around pools and Burleigh Heads Surf Life-saving club, before joining TSS Aquatics in 2004. Her mum, Melissa Goulding, is a learn-to-swim teacher at TSS Aquatics and was a breaststroker in her youth.
Kiah came to the fore when she claimed the national 5km open water title in 2017, going on to finish 7th at the world championships that year. She returned to the pool for the Commonwealth Games before taking gold for the heat swim in 4x200m free at 2019 world championships, as well as 7th in 800m and 1500m freestyle.
Kiah qualified for the 2020 Olympics in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle, finishing 6th in both finals in Tokyo. She is studying exercise science part time at Griffith University
