Kristy Harris

Kristy Harris (boxing) competed at her second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as a light-flyweight (50kg) where she lost her opening bout to the eventual silver medallist Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland. Eight years earlier in Glasgow, the then 21-year-old was the youngest member of an 11-strong squad as Australia’s first ever Commonwealth Games female boxer, bowing out in the quarter-finals. Injury forced her to miss the Gold Coast 2018 Games. Kristy began boxing when she was 14, training with her father Glenn and brother Kyle at Murray’s Boxing Gym in Geelong. She had her first bout at 18, made the Victorian team after only four fights and was selected for her first world championships in 2012 after only eight. She has competed at five world championships, her best result being bantamweight bronze in 2018 in New Delhi. Kristy, who trains out of Melbourne’s Collingwood Boxing Club under Kel Bryant, is studying for a Bachelor of Psychological Science and is lead singer for punk rock band Eye Roll. In May 2022, she was elected to the International Boxing Association’s Board of Directors at the world championships in Turkey where her focus is on gender equality in the sport and ensuring it remains on the Olympic program.
