Kyle Chalmers
Kyle Chalmers (swimming) added three gold medals to his burgeoning Commonwealth Games tally at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham in 2022: his pet event – the 100m freestyle (setting a Games record in the semi-final) – as well as the men’s 4x100m and mixed 4x100m freestyle also in Games records.
It was a redemption of sorts for the Rio 2016 100m freestyle Olympic champion – he missed gold by 0.13 seconds at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018 and again at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by 0.06 seconds.
Kyle had childhood dreams of playing Australian football – his father is former Port Adelaide ruckman Brett Chalmers – but decided to pursue swimming seriously aged 15 after making his international debut at the Oceania championships in New Zealand followed by the Nanjing Youth Olympics in 2014. A gold, a silver and four bronze medals from two Olympic campaigns and two gold, four silver and a bronze from three world championships speaks highly of his accomplishments since.
Coached by Peter Bishop since moving to Adelaide to complete high school, Chalmers relaxes by raising reptiles and estimates up to 500 have passed through this garage over recent years.
