Lauren Mitchell

Lauren Mitchell OAM (gymnastics) is a seven-time Commonwealth Games medallist and one of Australia’s most successful Commonwealth Games gymnasts. Debuting at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Mitchell won five medals, four of them gold including the women’s all-around event and as part of Australia’s gold medal-winning team. The Subiaco native returned at the Glasgow 2014 Games to add two silver medals to her career haul. A two-time Olympian having represented Australia at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games, Mitchell made history at the 2010 World Gymnastics Championships winning the women’s floor event, becoming the first Australian gymnast to win a world championships gold medal. She had finished second on the floor and beam events at the 2009 championships. Mitchell has an eponymous skill named in her honour, a triple turn (1080°) in tuck stand on one leg – free leg optional on the balance beam and floor disciplines. She retired from the sport in 2016, and in November 2021 was inducted into the Western Australian Hall of Champions.
