Linden Hall (athletics) twice narrowly missed the podium with consecutive fourth place finishes in the women’s 1500m at the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The latter was her third national team in 2022, having competed at the world indoor (Belgrade) and world outdoor (Eugene) championships before the Games.
Linden showed promise in netball and swimming as a kid but fell in love with running while growing up in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Essendon. A promising performer through high school, she headed to Florida State University on an athletics scholarship – while also studying dietetics – and contested three NCAA 1500m finals, winning a bronze in 2014.
She made her Olympic debut at Rio in 2016 – where she ran 4:05.81 in the 1500m semi-final missing a finals spot by 0.21 seconds – and her world championships debut in London the following year.
2021 was a breakout year. She became the first Australian woman to break four minutes in the 1500m (3:59.67 at the Box Hill Classic) alongside her first sub two-minute 800m (1:59.22) at the Queensland Track Classic and a 4:21.38-mile PB. She also went on to her second Olympics in Tokyo, where she finished sixth in the 1500m final.
She also competed in the 1500m at the Budapest 2023 world (outdoor) championships and Glasgow 2024 world indoor championships ahead of her third Olympics in Paris, her 11th appearance in the green and gold, where she did not advance past the heats.
Hall completed a Masters of Dietetics at Monash University in 2017.

Why did you begin your sport?
In primary school I was keen on a lot of sports, through inter school sports I found athletics was for me after making the state cross country team in grade 6.
Do you have any pre-competition routines or rituals?
I have quite a few of these! Firstly, I always jog for 8minutes 4.5hrs before my race, I have to have a hair ribbon that matches my race kit and always eat a bowl of rice 4hrs before and a banana 2hrs before the gun goes off.
What is your most memorable sporting achievement?
Running at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, in my first senior Australian team. I’ll never forget the feeling of walking out into that stadium.
Who is your hero / idol, and why? Have you ever met them?
Sarah Jamieson, she was Australia’s top 1500m runner when I was a junior and consequently someone I followed closely and looked up to a great deal. I’ve been lucky enough to have Sarah as part of my support team for quite a few years now, she is always my go-to when I need advice and has been an amazing mentor for me!
Who has been the most influential person or people in your career and why?
This is a hard one, possibly my college coach, Karen Harvey at Florida State University. I came home from college almost 14 seconds quicker, creating a pretty pivotal point in my athletics career. During this time I learnt a lot, including many things I still incorporate today into training and racing.
What is your sporting ambition?
Firstly at Gold Coast, I would love nothing more than to be on the podium - to win a medal at a home games would be incredible! In the long term, I’m eyeing off breaking the 4 minute barrier and Australian record.
