Matthew Temple

Matthew Temple (swimming) made his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham where he won gold as part of the 4x100m medley mixed and 4x100m freestyle (heat swim) as well as silver in the 100m butterfly and 4x100m medley.

Temple began swimming at Mill Park Swim Club and competed at his first state-level competition when he was 15. A 100m butterfly specialist, he claimed gold at the 2018 Australian Age Championships before finishing 5th at the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials. The following year he made his first senior Dolphins team for the world championships in Gwangju, finishing 6th in the 100m butterfly and gaining a heat swim in the 4x100m medley where Australia went on to win gold.

In 2021 he qualified for three individual events for the Tokyo Olympics – the 100m butterfly (Australian record), 200m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Although he opted not to swim the 100m freestyle in Tokyo and success eluded him in both butterfly events, he claimed bronze in both the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m mixed medley relays.

Temple made a post-Olympic move from Melbourne to Adelaide to join Peter Bishop at Marion, though he remains a huge fan of the Richmond Tigers in the AFL.
