Meg Harris

Meg Harris (swimming) made her Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham where she won silver as part of an Australian clean sweep of the medals in the 50m freestyle – sharing the podium with Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack – as well as gold for a heat swim in the mixed 4x100m freestyle.

Meg was introduced to swimming by her mum who was a swimming teacher in Mackay. Although she originally swam to keep fit for surf lifesaving, she started to take the sport seriously when the family moved to Brisbane in 2015. Harris was selected for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, winning the 50m freestyle, before collecting bronze in both the 50m and 100m freestyle and silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2019 World Junior Championships in Budapest. Aged 19, she made her Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021, claiming gold as part of the women’s 4x100m free relay as they broke the world record. Harris was also a part of the bronze medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay after swimming the heat. At her world championships debut in Budapest just before the Birmingham Games, Meg won four medals: bronze in 50m free, gold in 4x100m free and 4x100m freestyle mixed (heat swim) and silver in the mixed 4x100m medley (heat swim).

Harris has a hearing loss and uses a combination of lip-reading and hearing aids. She is currently doing a Bachelor of Business at Griffith University but made the move from Brisbane to Adelaide in October 2021 to train with Peter Bishop.
