Minna Atherton
Minna Atherton (swimming) finished just off the podium in fourth place in the 100m and 200m backstroke at her second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Atherton made her big breakthrough when she claimed both the 100m and 200m backstroke at the 2015 World Junior Championships, equalling the world junior record in the 100m. She later broke both that record and the 50m mark, before making her first senior team for the World Short Course titles in Canada in 2016. Atherton missed the Rio 2016 Olympic team but made the team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, reaching the semi-finals in the 50m backstroke. She claimed gold in the 4x100m mixed medley relay and silver in the 100m back and women’s 4x100m medley relay at the Gwangju 2019 World Championships, but again missed Olympic selection for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Atherton trains under Chris Mooney at Bond University on the Gold Coast where she is studying biomedical science.
