Nicolo Ciancio

Nicolo “Nick” Ciancio (weightlifting) is one of Australia’s best weightlifters and a member of the Australian Weightlifting Hall of Fame. Immigrating from Sicily in 1957, Ciancio was just 23-years-old he won gold at the 1970 Edinburgh Games in the light-heavyweight division. Coming from behind to win the medal and establish a new Games record of 986lbs (447.25kg), 13lbs (5.89kg) better than the previous best set by fellow Australian George Vakakis at the Kingston Games in 1966. A more experienced and heavier Ciancio returned for the 1974 Christchurch Games where he claimed gold in the middle-heavyweight division. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, finished 6th in the middle-heavyweight class.
