Percy Hobson
Percy Hobson (athletics) was Australia’s first male indigenous athletics gold medallist, when he won the high jump at the 1962 Empire Games in Perth, equalling the Games record of 2.11m. Hobson along with boxer Jeff Dynevor, who won a Bantamweight Gold Medal at the same games, made Australian sporting history in 1962 as the first Indigenous athletes to win Commonwealth gold for Australia at a major Games. Known as the ‘Boy from Bourke’, after his hometown in NSW, Percy was one of ten children, and a local park in Bourke is named in the champion’s honour.
