Raymond Rigby

Raymond ‘Ray’ Rigby (weightlifting) competed in both weightlifting and athletics for Australia. Rigby, a talented sportsman, was already an Australian representative in the shot put when he lined up in the weightlifting at the 1970 Edinburgh Games in the super heavyweight class. At the Games, Rigby heaved an enormous 500kg total, combining the press, snatch and jerk events to win gold in a new Games record. In Christchurch in 1974, he competed in the shot put where Rigby finished 6th. Winner of six Australian shot put titles between 1969 and 1984, Rigby also lifted for Australia at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Ray Rigby is one of the five athletes who have represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games in more than one sport.
