Samu Kerevi

Samu Kerevi (rugby 7s) made his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham where he appeared in in all three of Australia’s wins in the group stage and scored three tries in the 62-0 demolition of Jamaica in the opener. However, he ruptured his medial cruciate ligament in the game against Kenya and missed the rest of the season.

Fijian-born Kerevi comes from strong sporting stock. His father Nimilote represented the Pacific nation in football and his cousin is Test capped Wallaby Radike Samo.

The Kerevi family moved to Australia after being granted asylum visas when Samu was 7. A young Samu played his early rugby with Sunnybank in Brisbane. In 2012, he won selection for Queensland Schools, however his first taste of international success was running out with his brother Joshua for Fiji’s under-20 squad at the Junior World Championship in South Africa which gained attention of Australian scouts.

Samu won his first Test cap in 2016 against England in Brisbane and has been a regular part of the Wallabies’ line-up ever since, taking time out to make Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021 while also juggling club duties with Suntory Sungoliath in Japan. After a long lay-off following the injury in Birmingham, the midfielder returned to the Wallabies’ side in 2023, including being part of their World Cup campaign in France.
