Tom Wright
Tom Wright (3×3 basketball) was part of Australia’s first Commonwealth Games men’s 3×3 side that went down in a one-point thriller to host nation England in the gold-medal match in Birmingham. Having made his NBL debut at the age of 23, Wright played two games for the Sydney Kings, before finding a home at NBL1 side Nunawading Spectres. The 188cm guard – a self-described ‘jack of all trades’ – was introduced to the short form of the game by Spectres coach and Australian 3×3 head coach Dave Biwer. Initially playing for fun and fitness as he assumed his best basketball was behind him, Wright quickly realised his newfound zest for the game. After over 20 years of toil within the traditional 5 on 5 format, Wright was finally at the right place at the right time. Making his green and gold debut at the Shenzhen 2018 FIBA Asia 3×3 Cup, Wright returned home with a medal to match his new uniform. Going back-to-back at Changsha 2019, with a tournament most valuable player medal in tow, Wright headed to the FIBA 3×3 World Cup in Amsterdam the following month where he and the team finished in 10th place.
