Tony Manning
Anthony ‘Tony’ Manning (athletics) won the gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 1970 Edinburgh Games. Defeating Kenyans Ben Jipcho and Amos Biwott, and teammate Kerry O’Brien, who would later that year go on to set a world record in the event, it was a surprising yet stunning win by Manning. Winning the 5000m Australian title in 1970, defeated O’Brien and Ron Clarke, capped an impressive year for Manning. Hailing from Coolah, some 370km north of Sydney, Manning would often travel the 6-hour return journey to Sydney for training.
