Triathlon is an optional sport for men and women that made its debut on the program in Manchester 2002. 20 countries participated in Melbourne 2006, however the event was absent from Delhi 2010.
Triathlon was back on the program in 2014 with individual medal events and the introduction of a new four athlete Mixed Team Relay event.
Para Triathlon was introduced at the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
The governing body for Triathlon in Australia is AusTriathlon.
